This Is The Day is based on Psalms 118 (This is the day that the LORD has made; Let us be glad in it) and is a celebration of the gift of being. Some of the earliest ideas for the piece date back to 1999, and I continued to work on it off and on between writing larger pieces over the next ten years. Finally, in 2008 I decided to complete the work after being inspired during my jogs with Jim Barkovic, to whom the piece is dedicated. During one of our runs while I was finishing the work, Jim asked me if the piece had an Alleluia section. I had not found a suitable solution on how to close the piece, but Jim’s comment led me to see that an Alleluia section would conclude my ideas perfectly and thus was I able to bring to fruition a decade’s worth of ruminations. I am deeply appreciative of Jim’s musicality and friendship.
